Engineering Better Medicines-Personalized Medicine

WHY I CHOSE THIS GRAND CHALLENGE

Health care is one of the only components of human life that will never be obsolete. If we think back to technology or inventions that were considered ground breaking at some point, a lot of those things are now obsolete. A few examples that come to mind are: dial-up modem phones, storage technology such as floppy and zip disks, cassette players, and cathode ray televisions. However, inventions in the field of medicine will always be useful. For this reason, I want to contribute to the shift in medicine from generic pattern based treatment to personalized, more effective care. I strongly believe that if we can engineer medicines based on the genetic make-up of individuals, there is no barrier to the types of treatment we can explore.
